Wireframe vs prototype: what's the difference?

A wireframe shows what goes where. A prototype shows how it works. Both help you get feedback before you build, but they answer different questions.

    Wireframe

A static, low-detail sketch of a screen's layout: boxes for images, lines for text, rough placement of buttons and navigation.

    Prototype

An interactive model of the product. Screens are linked so people can click through a flow as if it were real.

    Where mockups fit in

Teams often move through three stages: wireframe (structure), mockup (static visual design with real colors and type), and prototype (interaction). You don't always need all three. A clickable wireframe is a perfectly good low-fidelity prototype, and polished mockups linked with hotspots become a high-fidelity one.

    When to use each

    • Use a wireframe when you're still deciding what belongs on a screen, comparing layouts, or aligning a team quickly.
    • Use a prototype when you need to know whether people can complete a task, want sign-off from a client, or need to show developers how the flow behaves.

From wireframe to prototype in minutes

    1. Export your screens as images (PNG, JPG, SVG or WEBP) from any design tool, or even photos of paper sketches.
    2. Upload them to a project in PixelPrototypes.
    3. Draw hotspots on buttons and links and connect them to the next screen.
    4. Share one link so reviewers can click through and pin comments on the exact spot.

    Questions

What is the difference between a wireframe and a prototype?

A wireframe is a static, low-detail layout that shows structure and content placement. A prototype is interactive: people can click or tap through screens to experience the flow before it is built.

    Should I wireframe before prototyping?

Usually yes. Wireframes are fast for agreeing on structure; once the layout is settled, a clickable prototype tests whether the flow actually works.

Can a wireframe be a prototype?

Yes. Linking wireframe screens with clickable hotspots creates a low-fidelity prototype, a quick way to test a flow without polished visuals.

    What is a mockup?

A mockup is a static, high-fidelity visual of a screen: real colors, type and images, but no interaction. A prototype adds the interaction.

Turn your wireframes into a clickable prototype

Upload screens, link them with hotspots and share a review link. It's free.
